At least 1,000 people living in nursing homes who've tested positive for the coronavirus have died without family or loved ones by their side, according to figures from the Swedish Register of Palliative Care

.

The statistics cover the period from February to May and exist to measure and improve the quality of end-of-life care in Sweden.

Covid-19 has hit the elderly hard here, with a majority of the nation’s deaths coming from those in their 70s, 80s, and 90s who often live in nursing facilities.

At one nursing home in Laholm municipality, western Sweden, workers there have kept a vigil themselves for residents who relatives can’t or won’t be by their side during their final hours, Swedish Radio P4 Halland reports.

Corona restrictions adversely affecting mental health of psychiatric patients

A ban on visitors in healthcare to lower the spread of Covid-19 is adversely affecting the mental health of patients in psychiatric care, Swedish Radio News reports.

Tougher restrictions on time outside the hospital for patients may also affect their care, says Jonas Eberhard, the head doctor in charge of psychiatry in the Skåne region.

In some cases it can make patients extra anxious.

They don’t get used to leaving the ward, and it can be a big transition to make when they later on are signed out," Jonas Eberhard tells Swedish Radio News.
