International news agencies, along with Danish newspapers and news websites said the ban on wearing a burqa, adopted by Denmark, came into force today. Last May, Danish lawmakers passed legislation proposed by the ruling center-right coalition that has tightened asylum and immigration rules in recent years.

Opposition groups and those who support the ban have said they will organize marches on Wednesday. The law states the conditions under which the face can be covered, mainly to prevent extreme cold or to abide by the rule of wearing a helmet for the motorcyclists.

The fine for the first time breach of the new law is up to 1,000 Danish kroner (about 130 euros). However, repeating the offense may bring the fine to 10,000 kronor or have the offender locked in prison for up to six months.

Other European countries have similar laws.

However, the stiffer penalty remains for those who force or threaten others to wear a burqa, as they may face prison terms of up to two years.
