Finland sees first reported case of vaping damage
Health watchdog THL is dealing with its first case of vaping-related lung damage, reports regional newspaper Ilkka.

The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) said a vaper in Finland has reported lung injuries similar to those emerging in the United States.

The THL said that in light of the recent rash of news stories tying lung illness to vaping, e-cigarettes could no longer be seen as an aid to help people quit smoking.

The individual who contacted the THL said they believed vaping had caused them to develop lung problems. Otto Ruokolainen, a tobacco specialist at the THL, told newspaper Iltalehti that the person first began experiencing symptoms years ago.

Last month the state of New York banned the sale of flavored e-cigarettes as American health officials investigate a rise in breathing illnesses linked to vaping.

Finland does not have an official reporting system for vaping-related harm.

However the law calls for producers, importers and distributors in the industry to maintain records of any suspected harm caused by e-cigarette vapour.

The THL recommends vape users immediately seek medical attention if they experience sudden health problems. Ruokolainen also advised vapers to bring their used products to the doctor for further analysis.

In the United States, a vaping illness outbreak has included symptoms such as respiratory problems, chest and stomach pain, bloody cough, vomiting, diarrhea and fever.
