Over 100 municipalities wanted more national support during the pandemic
Nurses in charge of medical care for the elderly in over 120 of Sweden's 290 municipalities think that the support from national authorities could have been better during the Corona pandemic.

That is according to a survey by Swedish Radio News.

The survey was sent to the head nurses that are responsible for medical care for the elderly in each municipality.

213 out of 290 of the municipalities took part in the survey and over half of them said that the national support was partly or completely insufficient.

Many mention unclear and often changing guidelines and recommendations as a problem, but also that the municipalities were not prioritised as much as the regions when it came to protective equipment. In Sweden, the healthcare is run by the regions, while the care for the elderly is run by the municipalities.

Karin Tegmark Wisell is a department head at the Public Health Agency.

She tells Swedish Radio News that they will contribute with what they can if there is a need of increased support from the national authorities.

She adds that the recommendations regarding basic hygiene routines have been the same for many years, and that the care givers are the ones who are responsible in each municipality.
