Sweden ends this week with a political agreement

The ruling Social Democratic Party (S) and Sweden's ruling Green Party have managed to reach a deal on Friday to form a minority coalition backed by both the center and liberal parties, ending months of stalemate after the election, according to reports by local and international media.

The Aftonbladet newspaper said on its Web site that the September elections were inconclusive, but if the Liberals and the centrists joined in aboard, then this means that, "a solution has been found."

We point out here that the two parties form part of an alliance that includes the Conservatives (the moderates) and the Christian Democratic Party, which is called the Alliance of the Bourgeois.

The new coalition will have at least 167 seats in the 349-seat parliament.

It will soon be clear what the two parties have gained from their support of the ruling Social Democrats to get enough to form a government after Sweden spent months of political debate and countless attempts to form a government after a parliamentary election held in September last year without producing decisive results.

The agreement, if made formal next week, would spare Sweden a new election and bring a four-month political stalemate to closure.
