Sweden’s local authorities need to hire nearly 150,000 new care workers over the next eight years, as the post-war baby boom generation turn 80.
According to a new prognosis from the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions, 146,000 new care workers are needed in the years up until 2026.
Eva Jonsson, Section Chief for Elderly Care in Malmö, says that applicants need good language skills, but not, initially at least, any qualifications.
"You do need to speak Swedish. You don’t have to be fluent, but you do need to be able to communicate," she says. "Language is vital for us."
No qualifications are needed for summer jobs in elderly care, and new employees in Malmö can work part-time as they study for a diploma or degree in nursing.
