Sweden’s Covid-19 mortality rate in intensive care drops sharply

Sweden's Covid-19 mortality rate in intensive care drops sharply

Sweden’s mortality rate for patients with Covid-19 in intensive care has dropped significantly since March, Swedish Television reports, with doctors citing better knowledge of the disease as one explanation, as well as the age of those admitted.

The 30 day mortality rate for coronavirus patients in ICU was 34 percent in March, and after dipping to 19 percent in April, it dropped again to four percent in May.

As July 8th there were 92 people in intensive care with Covid-19 in Sweden – though figures are subject to a small two day lag.

Swedish healthcare service website Vårdguiden 1177 set a new record in June when over seven million sign-ins were made as more Swedish regions started testing for covid-19.

The numbers doubled compared to June 2019, and is almost a million more than the previous record, set at the start of the Covid-19 outbreak in Sweden in March.

Sven-Åke Svensson, who works with digitalisation at Jönköping’s regional healthcare authority, told Swedish Radio he expects the increase in digital healthcare activity will have a lasting impact.
