Sweden sees gardening craze in wake of Covid-19

Garden centres and plant nurseries have seen sales shoot up by 10 to 20 percent since March, as working from home during the coronavirus pandemic has given people more time to grow plants.

Nina Jönsson, CEO of garden-centre chain Plantagen, says the current craze is also part of a larger trend of people seeking a return to nature and home-made goods.

"It all started when people began to make their own bread. Now they’re even more advanced, growing their own herbs and learning how to grow things from scratch," Jönsson says.

Bo, a shopper in Stockholm, spent the past few weeks at his summer house, and has no trouble believing scientific studies that say gardening is good for his health.

"Calm", he says. "That’s how my garden makes me feel. I don’t have to do anything, just watch the plants grow. It’s relaxing."
