Swedish MEPs want tougher stance on member states who weaken rule of law

Swedish members of the European Parliament say the European Union needs to take a tougher stance on countries flouting the rule of law.

They want the European Commission to be able to freeze subsidies for member states caught breaking the rules and not leave it up to a qualified majority of EU countries, as was agreed by national leaders in negotiations earlier this year.

During the summer, EU leaders decided that a qualified majority of EU countries could freeze funds. But that gives countries like Poland and Hungary too much influence and a chance to block a decision, Swedish Moderate party MEP Tomas Tobé says.

Instead, he wants the European Commission to have more power.
